Additional Learning Needs

What does Penarlag's Additional Learning Provision look like?

ELSA - Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

What is ELSA?

ELSA is a programme to  support our children who may be experiencing social, emotional, or mental health difficulties that is affecting their learning in school.

How is ELSA used at Penarlag?

If we feel a child's learning is being affected by their emotional behaviour in school we ask class teachers to complete a pre assessment tool to allow our ELSA staff to analyse and create targets to be achieved within the 6 week block period. The ELSA staff will also complete the pre assessment questionnaire with the child. The assessments are then done post intervention also.

What strategies do we use?

  • Emotion Coaching
  • Coping Cups
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Positive Affirmations

Advice and Support - scan the QR code for a widely used and shared padlet that supports parents and carers with understanding ALN. There are a lot of useful links, websites, information sheets and contact information readily available for you to use and share widely.

In Penarlag we ensure our children have access to a wide range of Universal Provision and we ensure each class has their own personalised Universal Provision maps for their individual cohorts. The Universal Provision allows for the 4 areas of learning to be supported through high-quality, inclusive teaching and support. Universal Provision acts as the foundation for learning before targeted intervention. In our school Universal Provision techniques include; differentiated materials, seating at the front of the class, movement breaks, and a variety of tailored resources.

Additional Learning Needs In Wales is a unified system (replacing SEN) for supporting children and young people aged 0-25 with learning difficulties or disabilities. It focuses on early identification and support through an Individual Development Plan (IDP) to help them achieve their potential. Key features include a single plan (IDP) with more involvement from learners and parents using Person Centred Practise tools and meetings. Here at Penarlag we pride on making education accessible for all children and allowing them to reach their full potential. Below are the key ALN documents linked to Wales's ALN Code.
